A Message From Elliott McCarthy
Reaching Out, Strengthening Our Community From All Sides
As we move through the beautiful early-summer
season in Spartanburg, our congregation continues
to grow—not just in numbers, but in spirit,
connection, and purpose. One of the questions
we’ve been asking ourselves is: how can we
strengthen our place both within and beyond our
synagogue walls?
In a world that often feels increasingly fragmented, the
need to build bridges has never been greater. Reaching
out to our non-Jewish neighbors and congregations here
in Spartanburg is more than an act of goodwill—it’s a
way of making our presence known, fostering mutual
understanding, and sharing who we are. When we engage
in interfaith events, attend community forums, or simply
invite others to join us for a meal or service, we build
connections that benefit everyone. Our visibility helps
dispel stereotypes, deepen friendships, and remind our
city that we are an active, engaged part of the broader
fabric of Spartanburg.
At the same time, we cannot forget the importance of
“reaching in.” Our own congregation continues to
blossom, and with that growth comes a responsibility to
nurture the relationships, traditions, and values that
sustain us.
We hope to have summer gatherings, offering our
members a relaxed and informal space to connect,
laugh, and build friendships. These gatherings are vital
moments of bonding that remind us how important it is
to simply be together.
And perhaps most exciting of all: we continue to
welcome new members into our community. Our
ever-growing congregation is a testament to the warmth
and inclusiveness of this synagogue. Let’s keep showing
up for one another, making space for new voices, and
supporting the many individuals and families who call
this place home.
So as we reach outward to make new connections
across Spartanburg, let’s also reach inward—to each
other, to our traditions, and to the shared heart of our
congregation. Both directions matter. Both make us
stronger.
