Thank you Sisterhood for a Delightful Family Shabbat Dinner!
A big thank you to everyone who came to help us make butterflies on June 4th. It was nice to have so many helping hands and to visit as we worked. We have over 500 butterflies in the freezer ready to package for our November 2nd sale.
Our next baking day will be on August 9th. Come help and learn how to make strudel.
This year, in addition to the usual things you help with, we will need lots of cookies and bars. We will be packaging them for our inside sale. It has been a long wait, but this year the sale will be open to the public in the social hall.
Pre-orders are due by October 20th. On October 27th we will be packaging everything. We will also fill the pre-orders and get them separated in the freezers. We will need any baking you can help us with before the 27th of October.
The freezers in the Sisterhood closet and the silver one off the kitchen have lists taped to the doors and a pen for you to mark what you have put into the freezer. This list will help us keep track of the pre-sales to ensure we can fill all the orders and have enough for the day of the sale. Please label the items so we know what they are.
August 31st we will put together pot pies at my home. They were so popular last year that we will need to make at least 50 this year. Please let me know if you would like to come help.
Again, thank you for all your help making the Sisterhood Bake Sale a success.

Our sisterhood lunch meeting on Tuesday, April 25 was such a nice way to visit and catch up on each others’ lives and just talk. We discussed many topics about our temple. The big one of course was the bake sale
This year we are beginning to bake a lot earlier. The first group baking will be for butterflies on Sunday, June 4 at the Temple. We hope by doing it on a Sunday that more of our members can come and learn how to make the butterfly cookies.
We are adding veggie egg rolls as something different this year. We need your help on July 19 & 20 to prepare the ingredients and then to roll and fry them. Strudel will be prepared on August 9. Come help and learn how easy it is to make. Chicken pot pies were so popular last year that we will offer them again. Last year we sold 35. So many that purchased them have already asked and want to order more this year. Thank goodness chicken breasts are reasonably priced again. We will be making them on August 31 at Peggy Buchman’s house. Extra hands are always appreciated
Small single items will not be offered this year. Everything will be pre-packaged for safety and convenience at checkout. I have donated three calculators with paper tapes so our volunteers will have an easier job checking people out. Please let me know if you will be baking something this year so we can plan for packaging it. We will be packaging and setting up on October 29th and 30th. Pre orders will be due by October 20th. The Bake Sale is November 2.
Ruth Friedberg will be making the phone calls to remind people of their day to help with the Friday Oneg. We miss Nancy Rosenberg who helped so much with this.
Jennifer Britanisky has agreed to chair and set up the Nominating Committee for our officers next year.
Our next Sisterhood meeting will be the evening of June 7. I hope by holding a 7:00 evening meeting that more of our members can attend. We will have wine, cheese, and goodies. Please remember to send your dues of $25.00 to the temple or to Sandy Gordin.

To me, Passover has always signaled the end of winter and that summer is almost here. It’s time for us to get out of winter hibernation. I’m guessing that many of you may feel the same way. Our next Sisterhood meeting is coming up. Please RSVP to Jan at temple, or text me so we will know how many to make the reservation for.
This year we will finally be back in the Social Hall at Temple for our bake sale. I’d like to begin talking about and making plans for it. Please think of any new items we could offer. Some things suggested were egg rolls or Knishes. Do you have any ideas about getting our younger members involved? Would anyone be interested in helping if we offered cooking lessons for our school age students? They can easily learn to make butterflies, egg rolls, or cheesecakes. Please let me know any suggestions you may have.
Let’s all welcome the end of winter by getting out of the house and visiting each other at lunch. I look forward to seeing you then!
Peggy
From April 2018 Mensch of the Month:
Nancy Rosenberg has been a familiar face in synagogue activities since she was 3 months old. Her parents, Seymour and Linda Rosenberg relocated from Niagara Falls, N.Y. to Spartanburg, S.C. for work, an active life within Congregation B’nai Israel, and to raise their four children.
For Nancy, childhood in the congregation meant growing up in “one big family.” Adults were called “aunt and uncle.” Her friends from the synagogue were also her friends at school and in social events. The Synagogue was the center of both religious and social life. Nancy remembers how well-attended services were and very large Onegs.
One of the happiest and proudest moments in Nancy’s life was her Bat Mitzvah. She conducted Friday night service and chanted her Haftarah.
As an adult, Nancy enjoys being involved. She serves on the care committee with Sandy Smiley.
Her participation includes visiting people in their homes bringing candy and baked goods to brighten their day. Nancy has served in sisterhood activities throughout her adult life and is past president of our local chapter of Hadassah. Her lemon and almond pound cakes are famous sellers at the Sis- terhood Annual Bake Sale for which Nancy bakes 12.
Judaism with its prayers, customs and traditions means continuity for Nancy. The continuity brings her a great deal of comfort in her spirituality as well as reaffirmation in life.
Thank you to all those who helped make this year’s bake sale a success. We were able to clear over $5,000.
At our meeting on Sunday, we voted to support three charities with donations. We will be sending donations to Mobile Meals, The Soup Kitchen, and to Crystal for the dinners she provides on holidays to the homeless. The bake sale is our only fund raiser for the temple, and we are delighted that we earned these funds from our efforts.
Next year we will begin our baking at the temple in August and will do it on a Sunday and weekday so that some of our newer members can participate. We need to show others how the strudel and butterflies are done. As our congregation has aged, we have lost many of those who began this tradition. It is a fun way to get to know other members, in addition to the work.
You do not have to know how to bake, our experienced bakers will show you the steps and it also becomes a social event as we all work together on different parts of the baking.
As I am sure you know, the Temple needs to replace the roof. Sisterhood is able to donate $25,000.00 toward this major repair.
We will begin again providing for the oneg after services. Nancy Rosenberg will be contacting you for your help. We ask that two people help each of the three Friday’s a month that this is needed. This is not just a Sisterhood thing, but something the entire congregation should support.
The Sisterhood Room does not have an emergency exit. This has become very important for the safety of those using that room. We are going to find a contractor who can install a second way to exit the room in an emergency. It will be expensive, but everyone agreed it was necessary. Thanks to the hard work of current and previous Sisterhood members, we do have savings to use for this.
Again, thank you to all who helped this year, and previous years with our bake sale so that we can help with monies to support projects needed at our temple.

As you read this, the Sisterhood is busy finishing preparations for the drive-thru bake sale. So many members have helped in innumerable ways to make it possible to even have a bake sale this year. We appreciate all your help and thank you to all of you who placed orders to help make this fund raiser successful. It has been a very different experience this year only being able to take pre-orders and trying to be sure we had everything ordered. We appreciate your understanding changes. This was done to protect everyone’s health. Hopefully, we can return to the historic way of holding the bake sale next year. We do still have some items available. Please contact Jan in the office for a list.
Our Sisterhood general meeting is announced in Temple Topics. We will be discussing the bake sale and would love to have your input. We had very few people able to help with the baking this year, and one suggestion has been not to continue in the future. Please join us and make your comments and suggestions on how we can improve the experience next year.

I hope you all had a sweet New Year and have an easy fast.
Now that the holidays are almost over, Sisterhood is working toward a successful, though different, bake sale on November 3. You will find an order form for your favorites on the Temple web site. Remember, this year it will only be by pre-order for everyone’s safety.
November 3rd is our drive-thru pick up day. Consider coming for a couple of hours to sit at the table under the portico as we deliver the pre-orders.
Use the form in temple topics or on-line to place your own pre-order to insure the item you want is available. There are also forms available in the temple office. It will take all of us to make the bake sale a success. Because of health concerns, it is a very different way of holding our bake sale, and we need everyone’s help and understanding to make it a success.
Thank you in advance for your help and understanding. This is very different for all of us, but we begin again with a long tradition of successful Sisterhood Bake Sales at Congregation B’nai Israel.
